Sports Barn Guide: Building an Indoor Basketball, Pickleball or Training Facility

What Is a Sports Barn?

A sports barn is a purpose-designed post-frame or similar clear-span building that puts a private or commercial recreation space under roof. Instead of designing a generic barn and trying to fit a court inside later, the building is planned around the sport.

Start With the Playing Area

Basketball, pickleball and volleyball each require different court dimensions and safety clearances. A home training court can be smaller than a regulation competition court, but the design should still provide adequate runoff around the playing surface.

Clear Height Is Critical

For basketball and volleyball, the important measurement is not simply eave height—it is the lowest obstruction over the playing area. Trusses, lights, fans, ducts and suspended equipment all affect usable clear height.

Structure Around the Sport

Column locations, door openings and bracing should be coordinated so they do not interfere with play. Large doors can provide equipment access and allow the space to open outdoors, but they need to be positioned outside critical court areas.

Lighting, HVAC and Acoustics

Indoor sports spaces benefit from uniform lighting, glare control, ventilation and careful equipment placement. Conditioned facilities also require an insulation and HVAC strategy sized for the building volume—not just floor area.

Support Spaces

Depending on the project, consider restrooms, equipment storage, a workout area, viewing space, locker rooms, offices, concessions, golf simulators or a mezzanine.
