Ohio pole-barn requirements depend on the building's use, size and location, as well as local zoning and building-department administration. Do not assume that an agricultural-looking building is automatically permit-free.
Zoning and Building Approval Are Different
Zoning can regulate where the building sits, setbacks, height and use. Building-code review addresses structural and life-safety requirements. A project may need one or both forms of approval depending on the circumstances.
Post-Frame Structural Design
Ohio residential code provisions include specific limitations for prescriptive post-frame accessory structures; buildings outside those limitations can require structural calculations or design under other code provisions. Larger widths, taller walls and other conditions therefore deserve early review.

Confirm parcel zoning, setbacks, intended use, required drawings, design loads, permit fees and inspection sequence with the authority having jurisdiction.
