Pole Barn Garage Cost: Planning a Garage, Workshop or Equipment Building

A Pole Barn Garage Is More Than Square Footage

Garage cost is driven by what must fit through the doors and what happens inside. A simple cold-storage garage is fundamentally different from a heated workshop with lifts, plumbing and finished walls.

Start With Vehicles and Doors

Measure trucks, trailers, boats, RVs and equipment. Then add maneuvering room, workbench depth and storage. Large overhead doors affect framing and can cost substantially more than standard openings.

Cold Storage vs. Conditioned Shop

Insulation, condensation control, electrical service, lighting and HVAC should be planned before construction if the garage may eventually be conditioned. Retrofitting can be more difficult.

Budget in Layers

Price the shell first, then concrete, doors/windows, site work, utilities and finishes. This prevents an attractive shell price from being mistaken for a turnkey garage price.
