Basketball Barn Ceiling Height: How High Should an Indoor Court Be?

Clear Height Matters More Than Eave Height

For an indoor basketball building, the critical dimension is the lowest obstruction over the playing area. Trusses, lights, fans, heaters, ducts and retractable equipment can all reduce usable height.

Design Around the Type of Play

A shooting/training barn can have different requirements from a full competitive court. Higher clear space generally gives better ball flight and flexibility, but also increases wall area, structural volume and HVAC demand.

Coordinate Structure and Equipment

Do not select a nominal wall height and assume the court will work. The plan should show truss geometry and the elevations of lights, fans and mechanical equipment. Basketball goals and backstops also need adequate structural support and clearance.

Future Multi-Sport Use

If volleyball, batting practice or other sports may share the building, plan for the most demanding overhead clearance before finalizing the shell.
